It is hard to believe that September and October have flown by! The next ELA theme that will get underway will be on Mittens! The snow will soon be appearing. There are many great books and poems on mittens to use in lessons.

We have really dove into Daily 5. They have caught on quickly and hopefully you are seeing their improved reading skills at home. Using the Cafe we have incorporated some reading strategies. These include: Check for Understanding, Go back and re-read, Cross-checking, and Tune into interesting words.

I love teaching in themes. I will be starting off the year teaching a BAT theme for the month of September and October. To see a live bat I might be creeped out, but in cartoon form they are quite cute. Bats are very interesting creatures. I'm sure you will be learning along with your child all sorts of interesting facts!

Also, right off the bat, we will be diving into the Daily Five! (some may remember from kindergarten with Mrs. Arnal) The Daily 5 is student centered learning which teaches children how to work independently.  The 5 centers are:
  • Read to self
  • Read to someone
  • Word Work
  • Writing
  • Listen to Reading
I will be introducing these concepts slowly so we can build stamina!

Keep checking back to see the progress we make!
